This Week’s Harvest, 5/12

May 12, 2010

eggs, lettuce, Swiss chard, radishes, purple kohlrabi, new potatoes, rhubarb!

Rhubarb!  I’ve been so excited about getting rhubarb that now I feel like I have too many things I want to make with it.  Do I make a crumble?  Jam, and then a jam tartCoffee cake?  Ice cream or milkshakes?  I also want to try this chutney.  But when I brought up the rhubarb last night, Nick asked for a pie.  And really, that sounds pretty fantastic.  A simple, sweet-tart rhubarb-strawberry pie.

I love the purple kohlrabi in today’s panier, too.  I love how it looks kind of like a Space Invader, and how its cruciferousness makes it incredibly good for me.  I think I’ll roast it tonight, along with some of those new potatoes and a couple thick slices of salmon.  Yeah.

There’s some Swiss chard hidden there among the rest of the green leafyness.  I’d like to try this concoction of Hope’s, or maybe I’ll braise the chard with some chicken and serve it over polenta.  (Not a very spring-y sounding meal, I know, but given the cold, dreary weather this past week makes me want warm, comforting dishes like that.)

The lettuce and radishes aren’t really exciting me at the moment, given the gray skies, but a salad topped with zingy radishes and maybe some goat cheese does sound like a lovely way to start a meal.

Rhubarb always means my mum’s apple rhubarb crumble to me – but this milkshake idea has me nodding my head in appreciation. Can’t wait to hear what became of the chard in the end!

Oooh, apple-rhubarb crumble sounds delicious! I dig combining rhubarb with fruits other than strawberry, but for a pie I couldn’t really do anything else. 🙂
