endives, apples, eggs, Brussels sprouts, carrots, potatoes, "red meat" radishes

So here’s a new one: see those vegetables between the endives and the potatoes?  The round ones that look like small, green-and-white turnips?  They’re radishes.  Specifically, “red meat” radishes.  I was sure there had been a mix-up, but no, it’s the right thing.  Apparently, these guys have bright pink interiors hiding under that unassuming physique.  I can’t wait to see for myself!

I am super excited about the Brussels sprouts, which I absolutely love.  I even bought some over the winter break, impatient to wait and see if the panier would bring me any in the new year.  That time, I slow-cooked them underneath a guinea hen, and it was fabulous.  This time, I might just go back to my old favorite partners for Brussels sprouts, duck and caramelized onions.

Jenni’s got me craving shepherd’s pie, so it’s entirely possible that will be the fate of these potatoes.

Speaking of cravings, I’ve also had a hankering for smoked salmon lately.  And deviled eggs.  And I happen to know that the two are positively divine in combination.

Tonight, I am finally making that duck legs and carrots thing I’ve been going on about.  I think an endive and apple salad will make a lovely accompaniment.  I want to make spicy pickles with the rest of the carrots, and I’m considering a savory carrot cake as well.  One with Moroccan spices.  Yeah.  The remaining endives will become Enchiladas Robuchon.

    The very first thing I thought upon opening this post was “what are those gorgeous little veggies that look life life buoys bobbing along in the sea”? Radishes! Who woulda thunk it? And oh, how I long for lovely Brussels sprouts. Being summer here, the only ones available (in the supermarket…) are shriveled, sad, and a testament to going with seasonality…

    How intriguing those green radishes are! Can’t wait to see how they look inside. I got to try purple carrots recently- they were carroty but not quite like the orange ones. It’s always intriguing to find a totally new vegetable.

    We call those watermelon radishes and I adore them. They’re in season here right now too and are a beautiful addition to a salad. In fact, last night with the fresh lettuce and those radishes, no one ever asked for dressing.

    Louise – I saw a rainbow of carrots at the vegetable seller the other day. I was way more excited about it than my husband was. 🙂 I love finding “new” vegetables, too!

    Tammy – I knew there had to be an English name for them (even though red meat is in English – just another example of Franglais). Thank you!
